Belle & Cosy Interior Design recently undertook a remarkable project, converting an old garage adjoined to the property into a luxurious master bedroom, complete with an en-suite bathroom and a cosy office mezzanine.
The transformation of this space, where vintage meets industrial chic amidst the olive groves, was allocated a total budget of £50,000 for building, materials, furnishing and design fees.

Embracing the past: the setting

My client's farmhouse, dating back to the 1800s, underwent a thoughtful renovation a few years ago, retaining its authentic stone features while incorporating contemporary design elements. Surrounded by a lush garden of olive trees, the property exudes a tranquil ambiance, evoking the essence of Provencal living. To honour the property's rustic charm, Belle & Cosy Interior Design opted for a colour scheme inspired by the natural hues of olive green and earthy browns.

Bridging eras: design concept

The conversion of the old garage into a master bedroom required a delicate balance between preserving the historic character of the farmhouse and infusing it with modern functionality. Drawing inspiration from the existing staircase and railings within the house, a bespoke steel airy staircase was crafted to lead to the office mezzanine, seamlessly blending vintage charm with industrial flair.

One of the key design elements was the restoration of the main house exterior wall shared with the garage, revealing the original stone structure beneath the roughcast. This restoration not only enhanced the rustic appeal of the space but also established a visual connection with the farmhouse's heritage. Preserving the old barn sliding door added a touch of nostalgia, lending authenticity to the facade.

Embracing nature: connecting with the outdoors

To capitalise on the breathtaking views of the garden, a stunning 3.5-meter-high and 2.5-meter-wide fully glazed aluminum French door was installed in the existing garage opening. This design choice not only floods the room with natural light but also provides a seamless transition between indoor comfort and outdoor serenity. Additionally, a charming bull's eye window above the French doors offers a picturesque vista for those working at the office mezzanine desk.

The renovation, spanning three months, entailed comprehensive upgrades such as full insulation, electrical rewiring, and new plumbing to ensure optimal comfort and functionality. Despite the extensive transformation, the master bedroom seamlessly integrates with the existing style of the property, enhancing its overall allure.

 

Artisanal splendor: en-suite oasis

The en-suite bathroom exudes timeless elegance with vintage-like cement patterned tiles adorning the floor and exquisite Moroccan hand-made Zellige tiles gracing the shower walls in various shades of green. This juxtaposition of textures and colours adds depth and character to the space, evoking a sense of Mediterranean luxury.

While the renovation achieved its primary objective of creating an integrated and stylish master suite, the design journey continues with the addition of final decorative touches. These finishing accents will further elevate the space, infusing it with personalised charm and warmth.
